🎭✨ A Historic Tradition Revived! ✨🎭
Step back in time and experience a cherished piece of Croxley Green’s history with the annual Croxley Green Mummers Play on Sunday, 22nd December 2024.
The Mummers Play is a traditional folk performance with roots dating back to Henry VIII’s time, though its modern form emerged around 1750. The tale follows our hero, St. George, as he overcomes challenges, confronts evils (including death itself), and triumphs to win the hand of the Princess.
🌟 A Local Legacy
Croxley’s version of the Mummers Play was written in the 1920s by Neggy Wilson, Headmaster of Croxley Boys School, and originally performed by his former pupils until the mid-1950s. In 1994, a group of locals gathered at the Artichoke and decided to revive the tradition. Since then, the Mummers have performed the play every Christmas, keeping the spirit of the tradition alive and raising over £12,000 for Rennie Grove Peace Hospice.
